Jonathan Weinzapfel takes on new role to share passion for law with fellow Hoosiers
Jonathan Weinzapfel

“It is difficult to sit on the sidelines when you know you can contribute and make the lives of Hoosiers much better,” says Jonathan Weinzapfel, former chancellor of Ivy Tech Community College who recently announced his resignation from the school.

In the June/July 2018 issue, Evansville Business talked to Weinzapfel about his position and his former role as mayor of Evansville. While Weinzapfel says his time at Ivy Tech allowed him to accomplish many goals, he wanted to return to his true passion — practicing law.

Now Weinzapfel is doing just that and pushing himself toward greater heights. Currently a partner at Jones Wallace LLC, the St. Philip, Indiana, native announced his candidacy for Indiana attorney general on Dec. 10, 2019.

Through his campaign, Weinzapfel continues to draw from his past positions. The lessons he learned as chancellor still have an impact.

“My work at Ivy Tech reinforced for me the importance of collaboration in order to get things done,” he says. “This focus on collaboration will be helpful to me as attorney general as I seek to address the needs of Hoosier families, businesses, and communities.”

For now, Weinzapfel continues to serve his clients at Jones Wallace while also earning endorsements from state leaders and organizations as a part of his campaign. With more than $604,000 reported in his campaign’s coffers by the Dec. 31, 2019, state campaign finance deadline and plans to announce several policy proposals, Weinzapfel says he is off to a good start as the election — scheduled for May 5, 2020 — quickly approaches.

“As attorney general, I am committed to restoring honor, integrity, and purpose to the office,” he says.
